Mercer Island, WA

If you’ve ever spent any time on Lake Washington, or traveled across the I-90 floating bridges to Seattle, you are familiar with Mercer Island.  The city of Mercer Island is named after the Mercer family of Seattle.  The Mercer Brothers, Thomas and Asa Shinn, used to regularly row between the island and Seattle to fish, hunt and pick berries.  The city was first settled between 1870 and 1880.  In 1928 a bridge was built to connect Mercer Island to Bellevue and soon thereafter a bridge to Seattle was under construction.  In 1940, the Lacey V Murrow bridge, which is the largest floating bridge on Earth, was opened and would carry current day I-90 across the lake into Seattle.  The city began to grow, and on August 9^th, 1970 the city of Mercer Island was officially incorporated into King County.
