Fort Lewis covers 87,000 acres of flat land within the Nisqually Plain, and is known as the premier military establishment in the Northwest. The base was founded during WW I, and quickly became a training facility for tens of thousands of soldiers. Today Fort Lewis is one of the nation's most diverse and modern military reservations, supporting a wide range of operations. The base is home to dozens of army maneuver units, including the 1st Brigade, 2nd Cavalry Regiment, and the 42nd Military Police Brigade.

Fort Lewis' vast terrain ranges from densely wooded to open, with post policy prohibiting the removal or trimming of trees, which include deep stands of pine, fir, and Oak.
